Final cake decorating class – Course 2

Posted by DeAnna Allan

I had my final Course 2 Wilton cake decorating class tonight, but I have no photos to show of it since my husband has our camera in Edmonton for the World Junior Baseball Championship. He’s been taking some strange pictures, including one of someone’s tongue. I’m not sure why. Check it out. We still have our Canon G2 but I can’t find the charger for it and the batteries are dead! At least my teacher took some photos for me. She’ll be emailing them to me and I’ll post them as soon as I can. I’m pretty happy with it. I think I’m ready for a break from cake decorating for now though. I’ve been very good in the last few weeks and haven’t pigged out on any of the icing I’ve been making. Thankfully we didn’t have to make cupcakes this time around, only one final cake which was torture to make. I had to bake 3 times until I got a cake that was actually useable. The middle just kept not baking properly and ended up being this horrible puddle of goo on the top of my cake. I’ve never had so much trouble baking, I don’t know what’s wrong with me! I’m usually quite a good baker. Usually. I think I’m going to have to make a blueberry pie if the weather keeps cool. Sorry, the mind took a left turn there. Thinking abou the box of blueberries in my fridge that I have to use up before they go bad. If Rob were home they’d have been eaten well before now!

I started Lesson 1 of Digi in Deep today but didn’t get very far as Photoshop crashed my computer. I noticed that a number of people have their layouts done already – someone actually posted their layout around 10 am Monday morning! That’s fast. I was busy making cake and preparing for my class! I’ll try to work on it tomorrow : P After I bake blueberry pie. Maybe.

The crop on Saturday went well and I should be posting images of them in the next day or so once I remember to take them to work so I can scan them.

Now We’re Rockin’ – Week 4 – Ready for Digi in Deep?

Posted by DeAnna Allan

Okay, so I stayed up until 1 am last night (this morning, I guess!) so I could finish week 4 before Digi in Deep starts.  Today I have to make 2 batches of icing, bake a cake and put the base coat on it in preparation for my final Course 2 cake decorating class tomorrow night. We are apparently going to make our cakes look like this absolutely beautiful creation of basket weave, rope border, and tons of royal icing flowers.  I’m not sure how I’ll manage to do it.  I made a cake from a recipe I haven’t tried yet last night but it rose really funny along the sides and then the middle didn’t cook properly.   I think I’ll make my usual yellow cake recipe and I shouldn’t have any other trouble (I hope or I’ll be running out to the store to buy a boxed recipe!).  I’m wondering if it’s the Wilton pans that are giving me so much trouble since I had a bit of the same problem (but not nearly to the degree I had last night) when making Kyle’s cake for his birthday.

I really like the two-page layout we did for Week 4, although I did re-colour the accent paper in my layout from the pink in Jessica’s layout (I have a boy, you know).  Kyle’s jacket is so bright red that I didn’t like the way the pink looked so I decided to change the colour to a blue instead. I think it makes Kyle really pop, and keeps the cold feeling I was going for (he is on ice after all).  I also love the white grungy border around the outside of the layout.  It fit perfectly with my icy photos!

He had so much fun ice skating and I was really amazed at how well he did on his new skates.  They are adjustable and only have one blade per skate (as opposed to some other training skates that have two blades to help kids balance better).  He even managed to take a few steps on his own (off the ice) by the end of the afternoon.  We’re hoping to get him into skating in September now that he’s 2.  I hope he’ll like playing hockey!

Now We’re Rockin’ Week 3 layout – Pasta!

Posted by DeAnna Allan

I love this layout.  I’m so glad I took this course.  It’s really forcing me to do something with my photos that I wasn’t sure I wanted to do an actual paper layout with, but I still wanted to use them for something

On our camping trip to Whidbey Island last year we stopped in Bellingham on our way home for dinner.  Kyle wasn’t quite 1 yet but we’d been trying to get him to eat real food without too much success.  Jarred food was what he wanted.  Nope, no real food for Kyle.  We decided to order the kids chicken and pasta with broccoli, figuring it wouldn’t be too big and hoping he would eat at least some of it.  When it came to our table it was huge!  Little did we know what Kyle would do next.  Forget the spoon – he dug into the spaghetti with both hands.  Some of it ended up in his lap and on the floor around him, but a great deal of it ended up in his mouth and on his face.  It was incredible and horrifying to watch.  He shovelled it in and after about 15 minutes most of the pasta was gone.  He ate a bit of the chicken and touched none of the broccoli.  When they took the plate away the broccoli was still in the perfect little bundle it came in.  He stil won’t eat broccoli.

This layout is so cool.  I love the filmstrip look, and how the main photo looks like it’s part of a slideshow.  The other cool thing is how the photo in the bottom left fades into the background paper.  My photo originally faced the opposite way (so Kyle would be looking off the page instead of toward the page).  I didn’t like that since I think it draws your eye off the page when what we want is to draw your eye into the page.  I flipped the image so Kyle is looking toward my journalling.  I didn’t have any lettering or anything, so I didn’t have to worry about that when I flipped it.   Anyway, here’s the layout:

I have to finish Week 4 by Monday when Digi In Deep begins!  Yesterday was the PE Crop in support of breast cancer.  It was a great day, even though I was away for a few hours in the afternoon.   I managed to only get two layouts done but I am very happy with the way they turned out.  I’ll scan them sometime this week and post them so you can all see.  Tuesday is my final Course 2 cake decorating class so for the next two days I’ll be baking, icing and scrapbooking!

Now We’re Rockin Week 2 – finally!

Posted by DeAnna Allan

Well, I finally managed to finish my week 2 layout. I’m pretty happy with how it turned out. I used pictures from my son Kyle’s first haircut, which didn’t go so well. He refused to sit still and wandered around the shop trying desperately to get away from the lady cutting his hair. I think the comb tickled, especially around his ears.

I’m really glad I have taken this course, I’ve already learned some cool tricks. I never understood what “screen” meant in the blending modes in Photoshop. I finally learned that anything that is black on the layer you change to screen blending mode will become transparent. It was very cool for the overlay we used to add the last finishing touch to our layout.

Here is my final layout:

I think it’s very cool.  If you haven’t taken any classes from Jessica Sprague, you should.  She’s a very good teacher.  I’m hoping to sign up for Digi In Deep tomorrow.  The classes start on July 28 and I’m very hopeful that I’ll be able to finish weeks 3 and 4 from Now We’re Rockin before then!

Plus Lynn and I are attending the Photo Express crop in support of breast cancer on Saturday next week, so it will be another busy week – especially with Rob leaving on Wednesday!

Sometimes life just overtakes you

Posted by DeAnna Allan

Life can be pretty crazy.  We went camping in Washington State on Whidbey Island for the July long weekend (by that I mean the Canada Day long weekend).  We saw the Toronto Blue Jays play against the Seattle Mariners.  Then we came home and had to prepare for Kyle’s birthday party.  I made a Lightning McQueen cake, which turned out pretty well.  Then we went to Kamloops for the Kamloops International Baseball Tournament (KIBT as it’s commonly known) in which my husband was an umpire (of course, you say).
Somewhere in there I was also supposed to be doing the Jessica Sprague online digital scrapbooking class, Now We’re Rockin’.  I’m still working on week 2!  Hopefully life will get back to routine soon.  What?  Oh, that’s right.  My husband leaves next Wednesday for Edmonton to umpire in the World Junior Baseball Tournament.  For 2 weeks.  I guess normal probably won’t happen until baseball season is over.  Read that as October.  Forget that. Then there’s Thanksgiving, Halloween, oh and Christmas & New Years.  Okay, I get the picture.  Life is never normal.  It just overtakes you.  Here’s some photos for your viewing pleasure.

While Rob’s gone in Edmonton, Lynn and I are going to another crop put on by Photo Express on the 26th.  I’m hoping to get Kyle’s first birthday page done at the very least!
