A birthday card for mom…

So, I wanted to post this sooner, but it was a surprise for my mother whose birthday is today. I love this card and it uses two of my new stamps, and my new Tim Holtz die AND some cork that I found at Michaels super cheap. It’s really thin, about cardstock thin, so you have to be careful with it ;D I used the Hero Arts friendship definition background stamp with Ancient Page sandalwood ink, then distressed it with Ranger Antique Linen distress ink and my paper distresser then inked some more. I used pop dots to adhere this panel to my cardstock, and I cut it slightly smaller than my white cardstock, which I distressed with some more Antique Linen and then swiped Ancient Page chocolate ink on the edges. I used chocolate Memento ink to ink up the large flower patterns from Hero Arts and bamboo leaves Memento ink to stamp the leaves. I colored in with my copic markers and used my mother’s favorite color – red! I love how they turned out. There really isn’t a stem included in the flower stamp set, so I was trying to think of what I wanted to use, and I decided to use buttons!! I love it! I finished it off with some natural jute twine from WalMart and a happy birthday sentiment from Hero Arts essential messages set (which I cut in half so I could stamp one word on top of the other). On the inside I stamped the “bring on the cake” message from essential messages as well.

Here’s a close up of the flower. I stamped the flower twice, coloring in the center portion only on one image, and the entire flower on the other one. I cut each flower out (the one I colored in the center I cut out only the portion I colored). I curled the edges of the entire flower backwards to lift it off the card, and curled the center portion of the flower outward to give it some more dimension. I used a Bo Bunny button for the center and filled the button holes with diamond stickles. I curled the leaves slightly after I cut those out too.

I think it looks amazing – what do you think???

A quick birthday present…

I was trying to think of a good birthday present for a true girly-girl who’s having her 4th birthday party today. She is one of Kyle’s preschool friends. I thought something to play dress up would be a great present, but I don’t really know what she may have already and then it hit me! With all my craftiness lately I could make something for her. So, I went to Michaels and picked up some beautiful scrapbooking flowers, some glittery jeweled butterflies, jewel corsage flowers and hairpins (from the bridal aisle) and some silk flowers. When I got home I pulled out some matching ribbon and set to work. In the end, this is what I came up with:

I’m going to Photo Express today to make a box that is fitting for these glittery hairpins ;D I hope she likes them!

I have to say I really didn’t know I had this kind of creativity in me ;D I’ll be back on Thursday with another new layout, but in the meantime check out my Flickr photostream – you can click on the right-hand sidebar to go directly to it!

Canada Day at Safeco Field 2007

Here is another layout I did quite a while ago that I haven’t shared yet. I based this layout on a sketch from Becky Higgins again. This one is a bit of a hybrid layout since I created my own Safeco Field brush in Photoshop to use in the photo, and I did quite a bit of editing of the photo as well. I didn’t like how much a hat worn just slightly behind Rob distracted from Rob and Kyle, so I used my magnetic wand tool to select Rob and Kyle, then I inverted the selection and used a lot of gaussian blur with a bit of feathering so it would have a soft edge to the blur rather than a straight hard edge. I think it looks much better, although I would not normally use so much blur ;D I used my Quickutz Squeeze tool and the maple leaf die to cut out different colors of leaves and then I chalked the highlights to give them dimension. Here it is:

Kyle’s 1st birthday…

Here is Kyle’s first birthday layout I did last year (yes, I am very behind ;D) I used some Pebbles chalk and stencils for the balloons, and my Cherish Sizzix alpha for the title. It was a pretty simple layout, and almost the same layout as “The Bride” layout I did at my very first crop. Love that sketch from Becky Higgins! Not much else to say.

Keeping in touch card

Here’s a quick card I made up and I’ve entered it into the Hero Arts challenge this month of keeping in touch, back to school or stationery sets.

I stamped the background flourish in Versamark Dazzle on the kraft cardstock base, and set it aside to dry. I then die cut white cardstock with my Tim Holtz Alterations Ornamental Sizzix die, then heat embossed the background flourish in white (or maybe clear, I can’t remember) embossing powder, then inked it with Ranger Faded Jeans and Rusty Hinge distress inks. I trimmed two sides to fit it into the bottom corner. Then I tied a couple of Bo Bunny buttons together with embroidery floss in a colour similar to the Rusty Hinge ink. I trimmed a white piece of cardstock and inked the edges with Rusty Hinge, then stamped hello from the Hero Arts Essential Messages set. Then I set to work on making the paper roses.

1. I cut three squares from Basic Grey Capella paper (the 6×6 paper pad). I cut one square slightly larger than the other two. I rounded the corners and then traced a spiral on the back side of the paper which I then cut out.

2. Next I crumpled the paper to break it up and make it more pliable. I straightened it out and started with the outside edge and started curling the paper inwards. The middle of the spiral that we drew will become the base for the rose to hold it all together. You can use a quilling tool, or just use your hands, either way works. I picked up a cheap quilling tool at Michael’s for about $3.00. At this point I can also trim some of the paper if I think some of the edges are a little high and don’t look the way I want.

3. As I’m curling the paper around I’m trying to be sure to keep the bottom of the paper tight together so it almost becomes a cone (tight at the bottom and loose at the top), and I’m trying to keep it fairly tight at the bottom.

4. When I get to the middle of the spiral I loosen the rose slightly and get it into the shape I like. Then I put a glue dot on the base of the rose and tuck the middle part of the spiral onto the bottom of the rose. And there you have it, you’re done! Now you can do whatever you like with it. You can curl some of the edges with a bone folder or a tooth pick or skewer if you like as well.
