Christmas present number 2

Tbis is the canvas I created for my husband’s parents.

I love the Basic Grey Capella line and I had the 6×6 paper pad (which I had used for this small canvas).  I purchased one 12z12 sheet to make the longer stems.  I used my quilling tool to curl the ends of the stems, created some rolled paper flowers in several different sheets of the Capella line, and hand cut a bunch of leaves from one of the solid green sheets.  I love the beautiful soft colors.  The words I cut using my Silhouette and a simple typewriter text and then sprayed liberally with my Tattered Angels Glimmer Mist in the fabulous color of Chocolate Covered Raisins ;D  It’s gorgeous.  It looks brown, but in some lights it has a purple shimmery color to it.  I think it complements the Capella line beautifully!!  I had so much fun painting the background and adding touches of color here and there, getting it just right.  You can also see a sneak of the other canvas I did next to this one in the photo ;D  You’ll see how different it is next…

I have also chosen “one little word” for this year as I think it is a word I need to keep in my mind as I go throughout my year.  My word is believe.  If you haven’t heard of “one little word”, check out Ali Edwards’ post here.  This is the first year I have chosen a word.  I think this year I will need it and need to keep it close, front and center.  I really wish I could take the class One Little Word Ali is doing at Big Picture Classes, but it’s just not feasible right now.  Definitely check it out if you get a chance!  See you in a couple of days ;D

Christmas wrap up…

Posted by DeAnna

I thought over the next week or so I would show some of the presents I made this year for friends and family. In total I made 6 mini albums (four for us to give away, and two commissioned albums for a co-worker of my mom’s to give away), a necklace, 4 hair clips, 2 canvasses, 4 8×8 page layouts, and a coffee mug cozy. I was very happy with how all of them turned out and they were well received by everyone. I’m bummed though that I didn’t get any pics of the four mini albums I made, I ran out of time and had to send them out before I could take pictures. They were very much like this one, though.

I’ll start with the necklace I made.  Click on the image to view larger photo.

DSC_8446 I saw one while shopping for some presents and I thought to myself “I can make one of those” and, well, I did!  Never mind the fact that I have never made jewelry before…  I was so happy with the way it turned out and Rob’s sister, Christine, loved it.  I made the flower with fabric and layered the “petals” then added a button to the center.  I used two different kinds of chain.  In total there are three lengths of chain, two of one kind that are intertwined slightly and another with different sized hoops which is slightly shorter than the other two lengths of chain.  I added a few beads here and there and that was pretty much it.  I love it and I’m planning on making a few more similar ones for sale.  Here are some close ups:

I seriously don’t know where all this creativity is coming from.  Lately it seems that I see something and I think that I can do it and somehow it turns out the way I picture it in my head.  I suppose that the more you create, the more creativity is fostered and grows.  I have discovered that I’m okay with small imperfections.  I’m not fussing over little tiny details and am just getting things done.  Subconsciously those fine details that make a layout or a project complete seem to be falling into place easily.  Maybe it’s just practice makes perfect (although my creations are far from perfect and that’s okay too – isn’t that what handmade is about?).  I loved doing each project and they are all so different (especially the two canvasses as you will see…).  I’ll be back in a few days with another project to share.

Where did December go???

Posted by DeAnna

Okay, so I had this post ready to go to be published earlier this week but I guess I forgot to hit “publish”… Oops! Enjoy. I hope everyone had a very merry Christmas and had a chance to spend time with family. Kyle woke up at 4 a.m. wanting to open presents… To see Christmas through the eyes of a child again!…

Wow, this month has flown by… I’ve been busy doing things like this:

Sneak peek...

Sneak 2 Sneak 3

I am so excited about the top two projects!!  I can’t wait until the recipients see them ;D  This week will fly by, I hope I get everything done!!  Almost there…

Kyle is off school and we baked our gingerbread house today.  Tomorrow we’ll decorate it and probably make some shortbread cookies.  I may not post again until Christmas or later so that I can enjoy the time with family.  Get ready for some awesome projects that I’ll show after Christmas!

I am almost done with Christmas presents and next it’s onto a commission for two mini albums and my Christmas cards.  I think they’ll be pretty simple this year.  So much to do, only two weeks!!  Yikes ;D  Better get back at it!

Advent calendar…

Posted by DeAnna

DSC_8400

I finished my advent calendar on December 1st!  Just in the nick of time ;D  I love how it turned out and I know it will be a treasured keepsake for Christmases to come.  I used Basic Grey’s Wassail line for the boxes, and I painted the entire frame with my acrylic paints and dry brushed on some silver glaze after it was dry to add a bit of sparkle.  I added a few stickers to the boxes after I covered them with papers from the Wassail 6×6 paper pad.  I inked up the numbers that came with the advent calendar (I shared it before, but here is the link to get it on scrapbook.com), with my Distress Inks (Fired Brick and Peeled Paint) and my white Colorbox pigment ink.  When the white ink was dry I sponged on a touch of Antique Linen Distress Ink to tone down the bright white.  After the numbers were all dry I spritzed them with perfect pearls to give them some sparkle.  I also made some snowflakes combining a few of my QuicKutz Squeeze snowflake dies and some of the patterned paper.  I adhered some bling brads to the front of the snowflakes and then attached them to some of the boxes.  I decided not to dress up all of the boxes, only the ones with solid papers.  I adhered the numbers using Glossy Accents and then I got to work on creating the middle piece.

I started with a 12×12 Bo Bunny dot cardstock and used the back (solid) side.  It wasn’t quite as dark as I wanted it so I inked it up direct to paper with Fired Brick and then sponged on a bit of Antique Linen.  I heat set it to dry.  Then I took the lightest patterned paper and one of the solid white/cream papers in the 6×6 pad and created some hills.  I created a few spiral flowers and used some of the stickers from the Wassail sticker sheet to create a branch with flowers, a title and added a snowflake and a beautiful red and white swirl bird.  I glued everything down, and heat embossed two ornaments to hang from the title with glitter embossing powder from Stampendous.  Then I used some puffy snow I got from my LSS and sprinkled on some glitter right away after painting it on so it would stick – to give the snow on the “hills” some sparkle.  That was it!

I think the hardest part of this advent calendar was putting the pieces together from the calendar itself.  I had to use my husband’s palm sander to grind down the connections where the parts separate from the sheets they come in.  The calendar does not come assembled – it comes with a back, four outside pieces, four inside parts to create the inner box, and individual pieces that separate where each individual box sits – if that makes sense!  All of the main wood pieces are connected to each other and you have to separate them.  Separating them leaves bits kind of like when you punch out die cut pieces out of a sheet.  The individual boxes are flat and you have to glue them together and then decorate them as you wish.  Once it was all sanded, glued together and then painted, assembly went very fast.  In hindsight I should have taken pictures as I did it, but I was trying to get it done fast so it would be ready on time and I didn’t think of it at the time.
