Busy crafting

Posted by DeAnna

I have not been very busy at work so instead I’ve been crafting.  One thing I like about working from home is that when things are slow, I still have to be at my computer waiting for a job to come in.  That sounds like an oxymoron, but it’s not.  It is dedicated time that I am in the den, without my kids bugging me or interrupting.  If there’s nothing for me to do for work, then I am crafting.  That’s a good thing.  Here are some of the most recent things I’ve made, all of which are destined for Etsy.

DSC_8211

Hand made flowers from hand made paper (which I bought ages ago for our wedding invitations and just found what was left of it when I was purging ;D)  They are very delicate but I think they are gorgeous!

DSC_8213 Another set of hair clips.  I’ve been making these ribbon flowers lately too – so fun!

DSC_8185 A set of four Christmas cards.  I used papers from Basic Grey’s Wassail paper line.  I cut them with my Tim Holtz/Sizzix scallop die.  I hand colored the reindeer with my Copic markers and my white gel pen (Signo) on the kraft cardstock (Bazzill) and punched it out with my EK Success circle punch.  I inked with ColorBox inks and stamped the sentiment using Fired Brick Distress Ink.  Both stamps are Imaginisce.  I think they are adorable ;D

I have the Basic Grey 6×6 paper pad of the Pyrus line and I love the colors and bold patterns in it, and I’ve been trying to make cards with it lately, but I’ve been struggling with it because of its bold patterns.  I follow the blog of Jill Foster.  She shows a card that inspired her and then her take on the inspiration.  I love to look at her bold colors and beautiful distressing and inking.  Today when I saw her inspiration card by Shari Carroll, I instantly knew what to do with that patterned paper!  I can’t wait to play with it this afternoon.  I love when that happens ;D

I can’t believe it’s almost Halloween!!  We don’t even have decorations up yet :(   We at least have pumpkins which I’ll be carving on Thursday evening.  I love carving pumpkins ;D

Be back in a few days with more stuff…

New holiday card…

Posted by DeAnna

I made this card last night late, really late!  I finished working at midnight and stayed up until almost 1:30.  Boy did I want to keep sleeping this morning!  But I absolutely love it!  I have seen a number of people using wide ribbon and ruffling it and adhereing it to a card.  I think it looks really neat and adds such great depth and texture to the card.  Not exactly good for mailing though, so this will go to someone special ;D

First I die cut some Neenah card stock then stamped the polar bear (isn’t he cute?).  I colored him in with Copics.  I stamped the polar bear onto a sticky note and cut it out and placed it over the colored image to act as a mask.  Then took a Hero Arts border stamp and stamped it multiple times using Versamark.  I heat embossed with clear embossing powder and then inked the edges and lightly in the center and took care not to get any over the polar bear.  Then I removed the mask and inked the edges a little darker to give it more depth.  Next I dealt with the card base.  I inked the Hero Arts background flourish with distress ink, then spritzed it with water to dilute it and give it a softer feel.  Then I stamped it on the front of the card base and spritzed lightly with perfect pearls.  I stamped the sentiment using my Hero Arts markers, and colored just the snowflake with the distress ink, then lightly breathed on it right before stamping to reactivate the ink.  I punched out the sentiment with my EK Success circle punch, distressed it with my Tim Holtz distresser and inked the edges with silver colorbox ink and faded jeans distress ink.  I decided I needed something else and was looking at my ribbon and saw some blue satin seam binding I’ve had forever and decided to cut it in half and use it on the bottom of the card.  I put adhesive on the back with my American Crafts this and that permanent adhesive roller (which I love, by the way) and then just crinkled/ruffled it as I was placing it on the card.  I adhered the die cut panel over it, placed the circle and added a button and a silver star with some embroidery floss.

The little bear and sentiment are both from Imaginisce (I don’t know if you can get them online anywhere, I think they are from a past collection – I got them from my local scrapbooking store).  I love how they package just one stamp that coordinates with their paper lines and they are super cheap.  I’ll be buying these often ;D  My stamp collection is certainly growing!

Back in a day or two with some more projects.

Another 2S4Y card…

Posted by DeAnna

I loved the sketch from 2 Sketches 4 You and I decided to do another card for the challenge.  This is a card I’ve had in the back of my mind for a while but it totally came together tonight and I LOVE it!!  What do you think?

DSC00513

Lots of different products on there, including Hero Arts, Basic Grey, Tim Holtz dies and paper clip, EK Success border punch (can you tell I like that one a lot??  I’ve used it a bunch lately ;D)  I’ve also used perfect pearls spray a lot!  I love the way this flower has come together, and the Note to Self stamp (Basic Grey) with the friends are special treasures (Hero Arts) is a perfect match.  There’s also American Crafts cardstock and Bazzill kraft cardstock, and I used both  Ancient Page and Distress Ink to add depth and texture.   Now I have to start thinking about Christmas presents and get to making some of them.

I think I’ll have another update post on Friday instead of Thursday.  Thanks for looking!

Bonus card today…

Posted by DeAnna

I thought I would post a bonus card as a card I made matches the 2S4Y sketch this week.

DSC_8027

All papers are Basic Grey, as well as the bling.  The hello friend stamp is Stampendous and the branch/leaves is from the Pyrus bitsy stamps from Basic Grey.  The ribbon is unknown from my stash, and the linen bracket is from my old cross stitching days.  I used an EK Success border punch on the green paper and one of my spellbinders dies for the linen.  I used some Ancient Page chocolate ink for the edges and some twine I got at Walmart to string through the hello tag, which is also pop dotted.  I really love this card, I think it’s elegant and I love the layering I achieved on it.

Sorry for the horrible photo.  I’m looking into getting a light studio for my den.  We have such horrible lighting in our house, even though we have gigantic windows.  First of all, we live near Vancouver.  At this time of year it’s pretty gray most of the time, or full on raining, so that just kills the lighting for sure.  Secondly, all our windows are north facing pretty much (except for 2, and the ones that are south facing look directly at the house next door), so, we don’t get much direct light at all…  And add to that the fact that I take most of my photos late at night, not a good combination!  So, hopefully my photos will have better colour and lighting soon…

Anyway, hope you like it and make sure you check out 2S4Y!!

Cool new paper flower

Posted by DeAnna

I’ve been working on this really cute new paper flower that I absolutely adore. I made a whole bunch from the Max and Whiskers Basic Grey 6×6 paper pad:

And then I used the same type of flower on a card using Imaginisce’s Apple Cider 6×6 paper pad (which I love – isn’t the woodgrain lovely??).

I have visions of putting these onto a canvas with some paint and word art…

We’re heading to Kamloops this evening for Thanksgiving and our usual birthday celebrations. Rob’s side of the family has a bunch of birthdays in October, all within a month of each other. In order they are Rob, me, our niece Hannah, his middle sister, and his youngest sister from September 23 to October 24. Craziness!

Phone message-style note cards…

Posted by DeAnna

I was playing around with some of my Basic Grey papers and my EK Success border punch and this is what I came up with:

DSC_7980

I had fun making these ;D  I was thinking of an office style phone message and I love the way they turned out.  I love the “Go Away” – so fun!  Here’s a close up:

DSC_7989

I love the stitched border too.  It’s from one of the new stamps that Basic Grey came out with, I think from the Pyrus line.  Beautiful – I can’t wait to play with those papers, they are gorgeous!

I have some cards I made with Imaginise’s Apple Cider line of paper and stamps that I’m working on right now, which I hope to be able to show on Thursday.  I’ve been having problems with my power cord for my Mac, this is actually the third one and it seems to be defective, working intermittently since the day I got it on September 1.  I’m returning it on Thursday for another one – fourth time’s the charm???  If the new one doesn’t work either I’m going to demand the new style of power cord, maybe I’ll have fewer issues…

These cards are up for sale in my Etsy shop if you’re interested in them.  Check it out here or on the sidebar on the right.

Keeping in touch card

Posted by DeAnna

Here’s a quick card I made up and I’ve entered it into the Hero Arts challenge this month of keeping in touch, back to school or stationery sets.

DSC_7581

I stamped the background flourish in Versamark Dazzle on the kraft cardstock base, and set it aside to dry. I then die cut white cardstock with my Tim Holtz Alterations Ornamental Sizzix die, then heat embossed the background flourish in white (or maybe clear, I can’t remember) embossing powder, then inked it with Ranger Faded Jeans and Rusty Hinge distress inks. I trimmed two sides to fit it into the bottom corner. Then I tied a couple of Bo Bunny buttons together with embroidery floss in a colour similar to the Rusty Hinge ink. I trimmed a white piece of cardstock and inked the edges with Rusty Hinge, then stamped hello from the Hero Arts Essential Messages set. Then I set to work on making the paper roses.

1.  I cut three squares from Basic Grey Capella paper (the 6×6 paper pad). I cut one square slightly larger than the other two. I rounded the corners and then traced a spiral on the back side of the paper which I then cut out.

2.  Next I crumpled the paper to break it up and make it more pliable.  I straightened it out and started with the outside edge and started curling the paper inwards.  The middle of the spiral that we drew will become the base for the rose to hold it all together.  You can use a quilling tool, or just use your hands, either way works.  I picked up a cheap quilling tool at Michael’s for about $3.00. At this point I can also trim some of the paper if I think some of the edges are a little high and don’t look the way I want.

3.  As I’m curling the paper around I’m trying to be sure to keep the bottom of the paper tight together so it almost becomes a cone (tight at the bottom and loose at the top), and I’m trying to keep it fairly tight at the bottom.

4.  When I get to the middle of the spiral I loosen the rose slightly and get it into the shape I like.  Then I put a glue dot on the base of the rose and tuck the middle part of the spiral onto the bottom of the rose.    And there you have it, you’re done!  Now you can do whatever you like with it.  You can curl some of the edges with a bone folder or a tooth pick or skewer if you like as well.

Here’s a photo tutorial so you can visualize ;D

Another dinosaur card

Posted by DeAnna

I attended a class at Photo Express about a month ago that was an all-occasion Copic card class.  We made three different cards, and I absolutely loved the dinosaur stamp they used and I am so happy with the way my coloring turned out.  Check this out:

DSC_5388

I colored most of the dinosaur in my lightest green, leaving the nails and teeth white.  I then colored highlights with my darkest green (I only have two greens and they aren’t even in the same color family but they look good together so I go with it ;D).  Then I went back with my lightest green and blended the highlights in.  Then I went back and added dark green to the spots.  Then I decided I didn’t like his belly just being the light green so I used my colorless blender and removed some of the color and then colored over it with my buttercup yellow (Y21).  I love the way this turned out.  I did pretty much the same thing with the teeth/nails.  I colored them in with my yellow and then used my colorless blender to remove some of the yellow near the tips.  The card was for a boy who was turning 1 so I used blue for the present and since I don’t have an orange Copic I used dark purple to contrast with the blue in the party hat.  After I cut him out I used one of my black markers to color around the image to hide the white paper which is a major pet peeve of mine.

I have no idea who makes the stamp since we didn’t get to use the actual stamps.  PE stamped the image multiple times and then copied them on their copier for the class members.  It worked out well since I have enough materials to make several cards, but they didn’t provide us with a materials list.

I have a couple other cards to make from the class, and I’ll share them soon.  I haven’t scanned in any of the layouts I have been doing recently yet, and we’re in Kamloops visiting for the weekend now so I’ll have to share those next week.  I’m very excited about some of the layouts I have done in the last week too ;D  I’m totally in a crafty zone right now and I hope it doesn’t go away anytime soon ;D

Have a great weekend!

Teacher thank you cards

Posted by DeAnna

I had to do some quick teacher thank you cards last week after we came back from camping for Kyle’s last day (a fun day) of preschool. He goes back to the same preschool in September three days a week and I’m glad I’ve been able to keep him at the same school instead of having to move him because they don’t do infant care. I have been able to stay at home and not return to a “job” (although I am working from home for a new company) and that meant I didn’t have to move him so that both kids were at the same facility. He’s enjoyed this year tremendously and his learning exploded throughout this last year. I have a set of stamps from Basic Grey that I love (Tree Hugger), it has the cutest owl and a hand drawn speech bubble, and a couple of little smiley faces, along with a bunch of other stamps in the set. I decided to use the owl, since really, owls are notoriously linked to teachers ;D I paired the stamps with some Basic Grey paper from the Green at Heart 6×6 paper pad and a kraft cardstock base. Check it out:

I stamped the owl once using Memento ink in brown and then stamped on white cardstock with Green Memento ink and coloured it in with my Copics the cut it out and adhered it without popping it.  Isn’t the owl just adorable? I love the funky googly eyes!  On the inside I used the large Thank You from the Basic Grey set.  I finished it off with a double bow with some of my floss from my cross-stitching days many moons ago.  Finally I have a use for it!!

That’s it for today.  Have a great weekend!

Happy Canada Day!

Posted by DeAnna

Just a quick post today to show off a card I made for a friend who hosts an infamous Canada Day warm-up party every year. They are great neighbors and I thought I would thank them by making a card for them. I have no idea who makes the stamps I used, I can’t tell from the wooden base, but I bought them from Michaels and I knew I would get some good use out of them, especially this year with Olympic themed layouts and all. The paper I bought from a dollar store nearby, the leaves were cut with my QuicKutz Squeeze and the maple leaf die, and the button is from a bag of buttons at Michaels. The floss is from my stash of DMC floss. It was a quick and easy card to put together and I love it! I colored in the heart and the EH! with my R59 Copic and used the blender pen to give some highlights to the heart. Top it off with a kraft cardstock base stamped with the Hero Arts background flourish with VersaMark and we’re good.  I put one of the stamps from the Hero Arts Essential Sayings set on the inside as well.

DSC_5537

We are actually going camping in the states this weekend (go figure – for the Canada Day weekend ;D) I’ll be back next week with some layouts I did recently.
