Kyle @ 2…

Posted by DeAnna

Here’s another layout I did a few weeks ago while Rob was away in London Ontario supervising a national tournament. This one has been in the works for a while and I’m so glad to finally have it done.

Kyle_at_2

I’ve wanted to do a layout with circles for a while, and of course, as usual I had a ton of photos. I played around with them, trimmed them down, played, trimmed some more until I finally had a workable grouping. I knew I would have a 5×7 of Kyle on the left and I decided to use a hand-drawn circle right against the edge to mat his photo with. I then cut a bunch of circles with my circle cutter in various sizes, on different patterned papers in the My Little Yellow Bicycle Piggy Tales line. i distressed some of the circles with my Heidi Swapp distressing tool. I inked the cardstock with some Fired Brick Distress ink and then laid down all the circles in small groupings. Then I put my photos down and put a couple of rub-ons from Imaginisce to border the main photo of Kyle.  I put on a couple other rub ons but I can’t remember who they are from right now, I’ll have to amend the post when I get home (we’re camping, again ;D).  I added a barndoor and a barndoor topper from the Piggy Tales line and my favorite photo of Kyle from his birthday (he’s {pretending] to read one of his cards – it was so cute!  I’ll have to take photos of it when we get home as well.  I wrote my journaling and called it a day!  (You can click on the photo to enlarge it and read the journaling if you’d like ;D )

On Thursday I’ll be sharing another new layout, and next week there are a few new projects I hope to be able to share.  There’s lots coming up from me; a few projects, my mini kit will be available for download probably next week, and the full kit (and a few other projects) will be available for sale in the next few weeks.  Yes, I said for sale – more info on that soon… ;D

Beautiful and Mysterious layout

Posted by DeAnna

I am in LOVE with this layout. It’s so my style, clean, linear, simple with some beautiful touches.

Beautiful_Mysterious

All patterned papers and epoxy stickers are Little Yellow Bicycle’s Baby Safari, Boy line, cardstock and buttons are Bo Bunny, the Love You stamp is Daisy Bucket, and the So Precious swirl stamp on the library pocket and the baby feet are Hero Arts.  The miracle/flowers is a Lasting Impressions rub-on.  The Miracle expression on vellum is from Deja Views Little Ones collection.  I’ve lost the packaging for the 100% stamp/precious and the ornamental arrow stamps,  and the baby details stamp (I think this one is Imaginisce), so I’m looking into who they are made by.  Inks used were Rusty Hinge, Peeled Paint, Ancient Linen and Faded Jeans, all Ranger Distress Inks  I used my EK Success border punch and my corner rounder punch.

You may have seen the photos in a previous post of mine, from the Jessica Sprague Photo Frame Ups and Special Effects class. matthew_incubator

I knew I was going to have a ton of journaling from Matthew’s birth (seeing as it was so eventful!) so I decided to use a library pocket I cut with my Silhouette. I heat embossed the so precious stamp in clear (Versamark Dazzle Champagne, AC Zing embossing powder) then I inked with the distress inks, and finished it off by spraying with Perfect Pearls. I had a strip of the lined patterned paper that I hand-wrote my journaling on and I folded it accordion style to place it into the pocket. When I put it into the pocket it didn’t look finished so I used my QuicKutz squeeze to die cut a folder tab with the cutout and I wrote Matthew’s name in the empty space. Here are some close ups:

I hope you enjoyed it.  On Monday I’ll have a layout from Kyle’s 2nd birthday and next Thursday I’ll show you my Easter 2009 layout (which I also love and have wanted to do a layout like this for ages – it’s girly and I can get away with it because it’s all about easter in pastels and such ;D)

Mini album birthday present

Posted by DeAnna

In my last post I showed you the card I made for my mother’s birthday.  Today I want to show you the present I made for her.  At one of the Photo Express crops I was given a Cosmo Cricket blackboard mini album.  It was so cute, but I wasn’t sure I would ever use it.  Since I’ve been so creative recently, the idea came to me that I would use it to make a mini album for my mom to carry around and show off to friends and co-workers, etc.  I knew I wanted to use red, since that’s my mom’s favorite color, but I don’t have a lot of red patterned paper that I could use, so I went to Photo Express and searched and searched and searched.  I couldn’t find anything.  Until I went into the Christmas aisle!  Ah ha!  Lots of red there! ;D  I saw the Wassail Basic Grey 6×6 pad (which I believe is retired, unfortunately) and when I looked through it I noticed there were several sheets that didn’t seem to have as much of a Christmas theme to them.  They didn’t have presents or holly or snowflakes or anything like that, and they were full of a beautiful rich deep red.  This is what I came up with when I sat down to work on the album:

DSC_7672 DSC_7677 DSC_7682 DSC_7675 DSC_7679 DSC_7676 DSC_7681

The pages that have the large Tim Holtz die cut (this one) will have photos of my kids on them.  I may cut them into circles using my punches to keep the theme going with the coordinating pages.

On the cover, I decided to try a new technique for me using a mask to make my title.  I started with the lightest solid color paper which I attached to the front of the album.  Then I took some Chatterbox alpha stickers and set them in the position I wanted the title.  Next I used Ranger Distress Ink in Fired Brick and a bit of Antique Linen (to darken the fired brick a bit), and sponged it over top of the letters, and around the front of the album.  I think I might have used some Peeled Paint a bit too around the edges.  I also used some ColorBox chalk ink in Burnt Sienna.  Then I peeled off the letters gently (they came off fairly easily actually, since I had taken some of the stickiness off with my fingers before placing them) and I was left with the lighter colored paper beneath.  I added some diamond stickles to the letters to make them stand out a bit more.  I hand colored the ribbon with my Copic markers to match the patterned papers, made a handmade rose and added some Hero Arts bling (gorgeous colors!) to finish it off.

For the inside pages I kept it fairly simple, using the die cut, and circles on opposite pages.  To finish those off I used my white gel pen to add some highlighting.  I’ve had that gel pen for over a year, and this is the first time I’ve used it!!  Once I have the photos in hand and put them into the album I’ll look at adding a few other embellishments to finish off each page.  I was having trouble accessing our backup system for our photos and I had to figure a work around to get to them, so I didn’t get that finished by mom’s birthday last Thursday.  I’ll show the finished pages when I’m finished with them – hopefully soon!

On Thursday I’ll show you another layout I finished last week while Rob was out of town.  I did three layouts in one week!  Woohoo!

A birthday card for mom…

Posted by DeAnna

So, I wanted to post this sooner, but it was a surprise for my mother whose birthday is today. I love this card and it uses two of my new stamps, and my new Tim Holtz die AND some cork that I found at Michaels super cheap. It’s really thin, about cardstock thin, so you have to be careful with it ;D I used the Hero Arts friendship definition background stamp with Ancient Page sandalwood ink, then distressed it with Ranger Antique Linen distress ink and my paper distresser then inked some more. I used pop dots to adhere this panel to my cardstock, and I cut it slightly smaller than my white cardstock, which I distressed with some more Antique Linen and then swiped Ancient Page chocolate ink on the edges. I used chocolate Memento ink to ink up the large flower patterns from Hero Arts and bamboo leaves Memento ink to stamp the leaves. I colored in with my copic markers and used my mother’s favorite color – red! I love how they turned out. There really isn’t a stem included in the flower stamp set, so I was trying to think of what I wanted to use, and I decided to use buttons!! I love it! I finished it off with some natural jute twine from WalMart and a happy birthday sentiment from Hero Arts essential messages set (which I cut in half so I could stamp one word on top of the other). On the inside I stamped the “bring on the cake” message from essential messages as well.

Here’s a close up of the flower. I stamped the flower twice, coloring in the center portion only on one image, and the entire flower on the other one. I cut each flower out (the one I colored in the center I cut out only the portion I colored). I curled the edges of the entire flower backwards to lift it off the card, and curled the center portion of the flower outward to give it some more dimension. I used a Bo Bunny button for the center and filled the button holes with diamond stickles. I curled the leaves slightly after I cut those out too.

I think it looks amazing – what do you think???

A quick birthday present…

Posted by DeAnna

I was trying to think of a good birthday present for a true girly-girl who’s having her 4th birthday party today. She is one of Kyle’s preschool friends. I thought something to play dress up would be a great present, but I don’t really know what she may have already and then it hit me! With all my craftiness lately I could make something for her. So, I went to Michaels and picked up some beautiful scrapbooking flowers, some glittery jeweled butterflies, jewel corsage flowers and hairpins (from the bridal aisle) and some silk flowers. When I got home I pulled out some matching ribbon and set to work. In the end, this is what I came up with:

custom-hairpin-trio light-pink-flower-hairpin dark-pink-flower-hairpin butterfly-hairpin

I’m going to Photo Express today to make a box that is fitting for these glittery hairpins ;D  I hope she likes them!

I have to say I really didn’t know I had this kind of creativity in me ;D  I’ll be back on Thursday with another new layout, but in the meantime check out my Flickr photostream – you can click on the right-hand sidebar to go directly to it!

Canada Day at Safeco Field 2007

Posted by DeAnna

Here is another layout I did quite a while ago that I haven’t shared yet.  I based this layout on a sketch from Becky Higgins again.  This one is a bit of a hybrid layout since I created my own Safeco Field brush in Photoshop to use in the photo, and I did quite a bit of editing of the photo as well.  I didn’t like how much a hat worn just slightly behind Rob distracted from Rob and Kyle, so I used my magnetic wand tool to select Rob and Kyle, then I inverted the selection and used a lot of gaussian blur with a bit of feathering so it would have a soft edge to the blur rather than a straight hard edge.  I think it looks much better, although I would not normally use so much blur ;D  I used my Quickutz Squeeze tool and the maple leaf die to cut out different colors of leaves and then I chalked the highlights to give them dimension.  Here it is:

Kyle’s 1st birthday…

Posted by DeAnna

Here is Kyle’s first birthday layout I did last year (yes, I am very behind ;D)  I used some Pebbles chalk and stencils for the balloons, and my Cherish Sizzix alpha for the title.  It was a pretty simple layout, and almost the same layout as “The Bride” layout I did at my very first crop.  Love that sketch from Becky Higgins!  Not much else to say.

Keeping in touch card

Posted by DeAnna

Here’s a quick card I made up and I’ve entered it into the Hero Arts challenge this month of keeping in touch, back to school or stationery sets.

DSC_7581

I stamped the background flourish in Versamark Dazzle on the kraft cardstock base, and set it aside to dry. I then die cut white cardstock with my Tim Holtz Alterations Ornamental Sizzix die, then heat embossed the background flourish in white (or maybe clear, I can’t remember) embossing powder, then inked it with Ranger Faded Jeans and Rusty Hinge distress inks. I trimmed two sides to fit it into the bottom corner. Then I tied a couple of Bo Bunny buttons together with embroidery floss in a colour similar to the Rusty Hinge ink. I trimmed a white piece of cardstock and inked the edges with Rusty Hinge, then stamped hello from the Hero Arts Essential Messages set. Then I set to work on making the paper roses.

1.  I cut three squares from Basic Grey Capella paper (the 6×6 paper pad). I cut one square slightly larger than the other two. I rounded the corners and then traced a spiral on the back side of the paper which I then cut out.

2.  Next I crumpled the paper to break it up and make it more pliable.  I straightened it out and started with the outside edge and started curling the paper inwards.  The middle of the spiral that we drew will become the base for the rose to hold it all together.  You can use a quilling tool, or just use your hands, either way works.  I picked up a cheap quilling tool at Michael’s for about $3.00. At this point I can also trim some of the paper if I think some of the edges are a little high and don’t look the way I want.

3.  As I’m curling the paper around I’m trying to be sure to keep the bottom of the paper tight together so it almost becomes a cone (tight at the bottom and loose at the top), and I’m trying to keep it fairly tight at the bottom.

4.  When I get to the middle of the spiral I loosen the rose slightly and get it into the shape I like.  Then I put a glue dot on the base of the rose and tuck the middle part of the spiral onto the bottom of the rose.    And there you have it, you’re done!  Now you can do whatever you like with it.  You can curl some of the edges with a bone folder or a tooth pick or skewer if you like as well.

Here’s a photo tutorial so you can visualize ;D

Easter 2008

Posted by DeAnna

Here’s another layout I did quite a while ago that I haven’t shared yet. It is a really cute layout based on a sketch by Becky Higgins again. I die cut with my Silhouette the title and the easter eggs. They have some really cute easter stuff in their store, and they’ve added a ton more since I did this layout. Sorry it’s such a short post, not much else to say about it! ;D Oh, I did find this one piece of glittery easter egg patterned paper, but I could only find ONE of it, so I tore it in half and used it to bracket the layout. I loved it and I wish I could have found more of it ;D Oh, well. Anyway, hope you like it!

A Christmas layout…

Posted by DeAnna

Here’s a layout I did in April for Christmas 2008.  I die cut the decorative frame on the bottom left page and spread glue on it with my 2-way glue applicator and then sprinkled glitter on it.  The glue applicator has little “teeth” that spread the glue (as opposed to a foam or pen applicator) so it makes the frame look a bit like wood, I really like the look of it although I didn’t intend for it to look that way.  When I saw what happened after it dried, I just kind of went with it, but I do like it.  I trimmed the tree and presents on the left side from a decorative paper and applied it to my red cardstock.  For the other side I used the decorative paper as my background because I liked the way it framed my photo strip and the title.  I tore up a piece of flocked snowflake vellum for the top corner and added a couple of buttons as accents (I think I’m on a button kick – I’ve bought tons of them lately).  I also used a white pigment ink to ink up the ornaments and the Christmas morning stamps on the left side and clear heat embossed them.  I hand wrote the journaling even though I HATE my handwriting.  I think it’s important to see my handwriting on some of my layouts for my kids to look at – I didn’t know until I met my father that my handwriting is almost identical to his, even though I did not grow up looking at his handwriting!  Must be genetic ;D

See you soon with a birthday layout!
